Xianfeng, Hubei

Well that was the longest 50km of my life. I've had a wet lettuce day. I've been subjected to the double wet lettuce effect. Today however was more like trying to run underwater. It was raining all day, but that wasn't the problem. Although I've mailed a lot of extra weight back to Hong Kong and lost a lot of other things that added to my ten tonne truck, Little Wheelie was slow. Sluggish almost.

Were we were both just feeling drained? I checked the mudgaurds to make sure they weren't clogged. I checked that the dynamo wasn't rolling on the wheel, I even checked to see if any naughty pixies were up to no good, using little sticks as brakes.

No excuses.... It was me. Wheelie is the lightest she ever been.

A long mountainous plod.

Hubei has already revealed one major difference to Hunan.

The farmers hats are bigger. Much bigger. The biggest one I saw however was in Hunan, but as general rule, Hubei is the place. Well this little corner anyway.

I saw this guy pop out of his field. I knew I had to get a shot.

So off I stalked.

......He was super chilled out.

After me chatting away to him for a while, he calmly asked what I was talking about.

I tried again. I wanted to know what was growing in this area. The answer was Tobacco, Corn and Tofu.

What I had assumed for hundreds of miles to be rice, may very well have been Tofu. They look very similar to the untrained eye. I will investigate further.

I saw a beetle that was so shiney the camera couldn't focus on it. As bright as a button.

The mountains here are just like this. Never ending, infinite peaks to meander through. I'd been climbing for about 5 hours and was finally treated to a really steep, long road, down into Xianfeng.
